Sweden is 20 minutes away from capturing their first gold medal at the World Junior Championship since 2012.

Victor Eklund scored on the power play at the 9:21 mark of the second period to give the Swedes a 2-0 lead over Czechia in the gold medal game from the Grand Casino Arena in Saint Paul, Minnesota.

Casper Juustovaara opened the scoring with a short-handed tally late in the first period. Jack Berglund picked up the assist.

Sweden has controlled the game, outshooting the Czechs 28-12 through 40 minutes.

Czechia have had their opportunities, but are 0-3 on the man advantage.

Czechia defeated Canada 6-4 on Sunday to advance to the gold medal game while Sweden downed rival Finland, 4-3, in overtime in the other semifinal.

Both teams are in long gold medal droughts at the World Junior Championship.

Czechia won their two gold medals in back-to-back years in 2000 and 2001 while Sweden struck gold in 1981 and 2012.
