First-round opponents set for Canadians at Roland-Garros

The draw is out for the 2026 edition of Roland-Garros and there are currently five Canadians in the field for this year’s second major, which begins this Sunday in Paris.

The top-seeded Canadian in the field on both the men’s and women’s side is Montreal’s Felix Auger-Aliassime at No. 4. He gets his tournament started against Germany’s Daniel Altmaier, who is 65th in men’s ATP rankings. Auger-Aliassime won the Open Occitanie title in Montpellier, France earlier this year.

Denis Shapovalov of Richmond Hill, Ont., gets perhaps the easiest first-round opponent as he will take on a qualifier or lucky loser to kick off his tournament. Gabriel Diallo, also of Montreal, draws Australian James Duckworth, the ATP’s 83rd-ranked player.

Canadian Liam Draxl and Alexis Galarneau each fell in qualifying and did not reach the main draw.

No. 9 Vicky Mboko is the top seed on the women’s side and will take on 20-year-old Czech player Nikola Bartunkova, who is 65th on the WTA’s rankings. Mboko is off to an impressive start so far in 2026 having reached the final at two singles events. She also made the fourth round at the Australian Open in January before falling to world No. 1 Aryna Sabalenka.

Montreal’s Leylah Annie Fernandez -- the 24th seed -- draws the WTA’s 80th-ranked player in American Alycia Parks. Fernandez reached as far as the quarter-finals at Roland-Garros in 2022 and is 10-6 all-time at the tournament.

Canadian Bianca Andreescu, the 2019 US Open champion, did not make the draw for Roland-Garros after losing to Viktoria Hruncakova in the second round of qualifying. Canadians Katherine Sebov, Cadence Brace, Kayla Cross and Carol Zhao also lost in singles qualifying on the women’s side.
