Harry Maguire will not be going to the FIFA World Cup.

The Manchester United centre-back confirmed to British outlet talkSPORT that he has been left off of Thomas Tuchel’s England squad.

“I was confident I could have played a major part this summer for my country after the season I’ve had,” the 33-year-old Maguire said. “I’ve been left shocked and gutted by the decision. I wish the players all the best.”

A native of Sheffield, Maguire has been capped 66 times by England. After not appearing at all for the national side in 2025, he was recalled by Tuchel for a pair of friendlies in March. He played in both matches against Japan and Uruguay.

This is will mark the second major tournament in a row that Maguire has missed. He did not appear at Euro 2024 because of a calf injury. Maguire previously played at the World Cups in 2018 and 2022, as well as Euro 2020.

Maguire appeared in 22 league matches for a resurgent Red Devils this season, helping to marshal a backline that was ravaged by injury. After being named United captain in 2020, Maguire experienced a major dip in form and fell out of favour with manager Erik ten Hag, appearing in only eight league matches in 2022-2023. In the summer of 2023, Maguire was stripped of the captain’s armband.

Instead of leaving the club, Maguire vowed to fight for his place and won it back, returning to top form and becoming a beloved figure at Old Trafford among supporters.
