Capitals sign forward Jenner to four-year, $23M deal; add defencemen Desharnais, Holl

The Washington Capitals have signed unrestricted free agent forward Boone Jenner to a four-year, $23 million contract that carries a cap hit of $5.75 million.

Washington was busy on Wednesday, also signing defencemen Vincent Desharnais and Justin Holl to contracts.

Desharnais’s deal is for four years with an AAV of $4.2 million while Holl’s is a one-year deal for $900,000, per TSN Hockey Insider Chris Johnston.

Jenner, 33, had 13 goals and 38 points in 67 games with the Columbus Blue Jackets last season.

He missed the first four months of the 2024-25 campaign due to off-season shoulder surgery and had seven goals and 19 points in 26 games.

The 6-foot-2 centre is coming off a four-year, $15 million contract that carried a cap hit of $3.75 million.

Drafted 37th overall by the Blue Jackets in 2011, Jenner has 212 goals and 421 points in 808 career games and was named the seventh captain in Blue Jackets’ history in October of 2021.

The Dorchester, Ont., native represented Canada at the 2016 World Championship in Russia, taking home a gold medal.

Caps Add Desharnais, Holl

The Capitals have made a pair of blueline additions on the opening day of free agency.

Vincent Desharnais’s deal is for four years with an AAV of $4.2 million while Justin Holl’s is a one-year deal for $900,000, per TSN Hockey Insider Chris Johnston.

Desharnais, 30, registered a goal and seven points in 53 games with the San Jose Sharks last season while averaging 18:11 of ice time.

The 6-foot-7, right-shot blueliner is coming off a two-year, $4 million contract that carried a cap hit of $2 million.

Desharnais was acquired from the Pittsburgh Penguins in March in exchange for a draft pick.

Drafted 183rd overall by the Edmonton Oilers in 2016, Desharnais has two goals and 26 points in 218 career games split between the Oilers, Vancouver Canucks, Penguins, and Sharks.

Holl, 34, spent the 2025-26 season split between the St. Louis Blues and the AHL’s Grand Rapids Griffins.

He skated in nine games with the Blues, scoring a goal with one assists.

Holl appeared in 41 games with Grand Rapids, scoring two goals with 14 points.

The Tonka Bay, Minn., native has skated in 405 career NHL games, scoring 14 goals with 97 points, split between the Toronto Maple Leafs, Detroit Red Wings and Blues.
