Uzbekistan have qualified for their first ever World Cup following seven failed attempts since their first campaign as an independent nation in 1998 – they had reached the final stages of the continental stages in qualifying for 2006 and 2014.

Ten years after he earned his 119th and final cap as a player, Timur Kapadze led the central Asian nation to the USA but was replaced by 2006 World Cup winner Fabio Cannavaro in October – Kapadze will be one of his assistants at the finals.

Unrelated non-football trivia! Uzbekistan is one of two doubly landlocked countries in the world, along with Liechtenstein - requiring the crossing of at least two national borders to reach a coastline.
