MacKenzie Weegar is on his way to Utah.

The Flames announced that the Mammoth will send three 2026 second-round picks, prospect Jonathan Castagna and Olli Maata to Calgary in exchange for the veteran defenceman.

The second-round selections are from the New York Rangers, Ottawa Senators, and Utah’s own pick in the upcoming NHL Draft.

Weegar, 32, has three goals and 20 points in 60 games with the Flames this season while averaging 23:07 of ice time.

He was acquired from the Florida Panthers, along with forwards Cole Schwindt, and Jonathan Huberdeau, and a draft pick in July of 2022 in exchange for star winger Matthew Tkachuk.

The 6-foot, right-shot defenceman is in the third season of an eight-year, $50 million contract that carries an annual cap hit of $6.25 million. He is scheduled to become an unrestricted free agent at the end of the 2030-31 campaign.

Drafted 206th overall by the Panthers in 2013, Weegar has 62 goals and 271 points in 610 career games split between the Panthers and Flames.

The Ottawa native represented Canada twice at the World Hockey Championships, in 2023 and 2025. He was named the tournament’s best defenceman in 2023 after recording three goals and 11 points en route to a gold-medal finish.
