Browning Nagle has died at the age of 57, Louisville Football announced on Friday.

The quarterback, who famously led the Cardinals to a 34-7 Fiesta Bowl upset of Alabama in 1991, had been diagnosed with colon cancer.

“We are saddened by the passing of Browning Nagle, former Fiesta Bowl MVP quarterback and Louisville great,” Louisville said in a statement. “His leadership on the field and passion for the game left a lasting mark on our program.”

A native of Philadelphia, Nagle was taken with the 34th overall selection of the 1991 NFL Draft by the New York Jets. He went on to appear in 24 games across five seasons for the Jets, Indianapolis Colts and Atlanta Falcons. Nagle would later play in the Arena Football League with the Orlando Predators and Buffalo Destroyers.

“Our thoughts and prayers are with #7 Browning Nagle, his wife Michelle, and his entire family today,” current Cardinals head coach Jeff Brohm wrote on social media. “A true Cardinal great! We will all miss him very much. Love you buddy!”
