Trinidad Chambliss’s NCAA career might not be over just yet.
CBS Sports’ Chris Hummer and Matt Zenitz report there is growing optimism at Ole Miss that the 23-year-old quarterback will be granted a court injunction for a sixth-year of collegiate eligibility. A resolution could come as soon as later on Wednesday.
Earlier this month, the NCAA denied Chambliss a sixth year over medical hardship. Chambliss asserted that his 2022 season at Ferris State, his redshirt freshman season, was impacted by a respiratory illness and he did not play. As such, Chambliss argued that since he only took the field for three “countable” seasons, he should be allowed to play a fourth.
With the argument rejected, Chambliss filed a lawsuit against the NCAA on Nov. 16 with the argument to be heard in the Chancery Court of Lafayette County, MS, which is a 20-minute drive from Oxford.
A native of Grand Rapids, MI, Chambliss appeared in 15 games for the Rebs this past season, throwing for 3,937 yards on 294-for-445 passing with 31 touchdowns and seven interceptions. He added 527 yards and eight more TDs on the ground. His season was recognized with a nod as SEC Newcomer of the Year and a second-team All-SEC spot.
With the acrimonious departure of Lane Kiffin ahead of the College Football Playoffs, defensive coordinator Pete Golding was promoted to head coach and will serve in that capacity in Oxford next season.
