The road to Augusta runs through the Lone Star State as the Texas Children’s Houston Open tees off on Thursday as the second-to-last event remaining before the 90th playing of the Masters.
There are still a number of notable golfers that have yet to qualify for this year’s Masters, with the two-event Texas swing representing their last chance to earn an invite to Augusta National.
The top 50 players in the Official World Golf Rankings a week prior to the start of the Masters gain entry into the first major championship of the season, making this week’s Houston Open an important event for names on the bubble such as Nicolai Hojgaard (47th), Pierceson Coody (51), Michael Thorbjornsen (56), and Rickie Fowler (61).
Taylor Pendrith, currently the 70th ranked golfer in the world, appears unlikely to move up 20 spots in two weeks, but can still earn an invite with a victory at either of the two Texas events.
The same goes for Sudarshan Yellamaraju, Mackenzie Hughes, Adam Svensson, and A.J. Ewart, who will join Pendrith in teeing it up this week at Memorial Park.
This is Yellamaraju’s first start since an impressive T5 finish at The Players Championship at TPC Sawgrass, and he will look for even better results this time around with a Masters invite on the line.
Brooks Koepka is also in the field this week and has quickly rounded his game into shape over the Florida swing with major season quickly approaching.
Koepka began the year with a T56 at the Farmers and a missed cut at the Waste Management, but has since posted three top 20s, including a T13 at The Players.
Always one to contend at the biggest tournaments, the five-time major champion is in a great spot heading to Augusta but crossing off his first win back on Tour would go a long way just before he goes for the third leg of the career Grand Slam.
