Corey Conners is the top Canadian after the first round of the U.S. Open at Shinnecock Hills on Thursday, sitting at 1-under after 16 holes.

Conners has two holes remaining and will play them out Friday morning. Weather conditions earlier in the day led to delays with the horn to wrap up action sounding around 8:25 p.m. ET.

The 34-year-old from Listowel, Ont., birdied twice with two bogeys in the front nine and added two more birdies on the back to sit tied for ninth when play was called for the day.

Elsewhere, fellow Canadian Sudarshan Yellamaraju had a rough start in his U.S. Open debut on Thursday but rallied on his back nine to finish at plus-3.

Yellamaraju bogeyed holes two, four and nine and birdied five in the front nine but was steady on the back nine, recording par in his final eight holes. He finished the day at plus-3 and tied for 72nd.

Nick Taylor and Ben Silverman also had tough opening rounds as they both sit tied for 93rd.

Taylor struggled on the front nine, recording bogeys on the 7th and 9th and a double bogey on the fourth hole.

He fared better on the back nine, making par on eight straight holes until bogeying the last to finish the day at plus-4.

Silverman started his day on the back nine and it was a tough going, as he double bogeyed 10th and 16th while adding another bogey on 13.

He recovered on his front nine, recording birdies on the sixth and seventh holes to also get to plus-4 on the day.
