Finland pulled off the upset of the IIHF World Hockey Championship so far and if you don’t believe us, just look at the stats.
Well, stat.
The two teams could not have been more different heading into Saturday’s contest. Finland possessed just two NHLers on their roster while Russia’s boasted names such as Alex Ovechkin, Nikita Kucherov and Andrei Vasilevsky, to name a few. Still, the Finns somehow found a way to pull it off despite being completely trumped in NHL experience, as TSN’s Gord Miller pointed out. Just take a look at this…

WOW.
It’s also worth noting that Jokiharju (Blackhawks) and Lammikko (Panthers) have combined for just 78 total NHL games. Russia had numerous NHL stars who played at least that many games this season.

Finland will now face Canada in the Gold Medal game after the Canucks knocked off Czech Republic with a convincing 5-1 win in their semifinal matchup. Beating Alex Ovechkin and Nikita Kucherov Is one thing, but getting past the Canadians with their roster would be simply remarkable. Finland defeated Canada when the two teams met in their first game of the tournament, so anything’s possible.
